Arepas in Our Cast Iron Cookware
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup whole grain corn flour (Harina PAN)
- 1 1/4 cups water at room temperature or warm
- Cheese (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Sliced almonds and a seed mix (flax, sesame, pumpkin seeds, etc.)
PREPARATION
- In a bowl, add the water and salt, then gradually add the flour while stirring
- Let the resulting dough rest for 3 minutes so the arepas are softer; you know the dough is ready when it doesn't stick to you and is easy to handle
- Add the grated cheese, almonds, and seed mix, then mix and knead
- Remove the dough from the bowl and form balls, then flatten them to shape the arepas in our Pataconera (patacón press)
- Place them in a skillet with a little coconut oil and let them brown on both sides; you can also use our griddle
- If you want to stuff them, shape the arepas, put some cheese in the center, place another arepa on top, seal the edges, and place them in the skillet, on the griddle, or in the oven
